CFP: Project and identity: heritage interpretation in European architecture (1750-1950). Panel discussion for Ph.D students in history of architecture

On the occasion of the International convention History, architecture and heritage: building the architectural identity. Milan, Europe (1796-1848) held in Milan and Mantua from 28 to 30 October 2021, a panel discussion for Ph.D students in history of architecture has been planned. The purpose is to deepen the issues regarding the intense connection, existing in every age, between architectural research process and the definition of our own cultural identity. With the support of Mantua Unesco Chair of the Politecnico di Milano, Mantua Campus, the event promoted by ABC Department of Politecnico di Milano focuses on the importance of the history as model and reference in the urban and architectural design creative process. In this sense, historic and architectural heritage carries tangible and intangible values, reflection of the cultural context that generated them. Among these, typological issues emerge, as witness of materials and construction system applications as well as language solutions, expression and manifestation of social and political conditions. From the Age of Enlightenment to the one of the nationalism in the Second World War, in modern Europe history became an instrument of research for individual or national identities. A selective process that comes out from the surviving architectural heritage, but also from historical sources stored in public and private archives or conserved in libraries. Indispensable heritage to investigate and interpret in order to understand, through the past, the identity of the present. Interventions may concern the following areas of study (not exclusively): • History as model and reference in the project. • Designing in historical architectural heritage. • Notes, drawings, notebooks and individual perception of heritage. • Trip as study and research tool. • Power and image: the debate about national architectural identity. • Dissemination and identity: the role of architectural magazines. • The perception of historical and architectural heritage through new tools between nineteenth and twentieth centuries. • Teaching and didactics as transmission of architectural heritage and identity. The panel discussion will be held on Monday 25 October 2021, online and it will be organized in sessions introduced by the curators. Each candidate will have 15 minutes to present his speech. Proposals (in Italian or English) have to be sent to in the form of abstracts (300-500 words) and be accompanied by a short biographical presentation (150-200 words) by Friday 10 September 2021.
